Kimpton Expands On the Island Manhattan, Including a Condo-Hotel

July 10, 2007 at 11:27 AM | by juliana | 0 Comments

Construction at Kimpton Chelsea

Kimpton Hotels has announced they will be open up two new hotels in Manhattan, one in Chelsea the other in the former Hell's Kitchen area which now goes by Clinton.

The Vu Hotel will open in 2008 at 48th Street and 11th Avenue, just west of Times Square and will feature 360 degree views of the Hudson River and the Midtown Manhattan skline. There will be 222 guest rooms and one floor of glass-enclosed penthouse suites. Additionally, a full service spa and a 2,000 sq. ft. rooftop bar and deck with "water features" is expected. We're guessing that could mean anything from a small pool to a water fountain.

The Chelsea hotel is still unnamed and will open sometime in 2009 on 6th Avenue between 29th and 30th Streets. The hotel is being built from the ground up and will have 287 guest rooms, a 6,000 sq.ft. outdoor terrace and full-service spa. The kick here is that this hotel will also have 270 luxury residential apartments where owners can take advantage of all the Kimpton Hotel services.

Already the condo hotel has signed on with China Grill Management to provide a restaurant and two bars on a multi-level 20,000 sq. ft. venue.

Wow, it looks like Kimpton, the little boutique hotel chain that could, is playing with the big guns now.

Straight from the press release:

· 6th Avenue - Kimpton's first ground-up construction hotel in Manhattan is yet to be named and will be located in Chelsea on 6th Avenue between 29th and 30th Streets. The hotel, with interior designs by McCartan, will feature 287 guestrooms and suites; a 3,000 square foot ballroom; 8,000 square feet of additional meeting space; over 6,000 square feet of outdoor terrace space and a full-service spa. The 50-story glass exterior building will also include 270 luxury residential apartments enhanced by Kimpton's signature hotel amenities and services. Acclaimed restaurant operator, China Grill Management, will operate the restaurant and two bars in a multi-level, 20,000 square foot venue. The developer is New York-based JD Carlisle Group. Construction of the $540 million project, which also includes a 500-space parking garage and retail, began in March 2007 and will be completed in 2009.

· 48th Street - Opening in spring of 2008, the Vu Hotel (pronounced "View"), will be located at 48th Street and 11th Avenue. With this location Kimpton becomes the first of several new hotels, retail stores and residential developments underway in this emerging new neighborhood just west of Times Square. The $125 million, 16-story hotel with interior designs by the Rockwell Group, will feature 360-degree unobstructed views of the Hudson River and the Midtown Manhattan skyline; 222 guestrooms including one floor of glass-enclosed penthouse suites; 4,600 square feet of meeting space; full service spa; and a 2,000 square feet roof-top bar and roof deck with water features. The project is being developed by Horizen Global LLC. Construction began in November 2006.

We did a little bit of digging, just scratching the surface and we found some buzz on Wired New York about the Chelsea project where one of the developer partners was listed as the Fitzpatrick Hotel Group. So maybe Kimpton came in and swooped this out of their troubled hands last minute. Who knows? If you do, keep us informed.
