[Ed. Note: Welcome to our Good Rate/Bad Rate feature where we look at hotel prices in the same city and decide which one most deserves your hard-earned benjamins. Rates quotes here were captured July 10, 2007 and are subject to change. Enjoy.]

Don't you just love it when a package includes a $300 spa credit, then costs $300 more than a regular room? Are people who stay in luxury hotels really that dumb, or do the suits just think they are?

One of those two explanations has to apply to the Remède Spa Package at the St. Regis San Francisco. You get a $300 spa credit, breakfast for two, bathrobes you can keep, and some extra toiletries in your room. All very nice until you see the price: starting at $954 per night.

Yes, you read that right. A rate that would look shocking even in Western Europe, for a hotel where rooms normally start about, oh, $600 less.

No matter, we tried four different dates and couldn't get it to take on the buggy reservations page anyway, so maybe it's just a warped marketing experiment to see what happens.

Over Labor Day weekend the St. Regis San Francisco had a special suite offer for $945/night for the Metropolitan Suite.  There was also a good senior rate for a Platinum Suite at $609.  The best deal that weekend seemed to be The Palace Hotel, a Starwood Luxury Collection property that had full suites for $275/night, a substantial savings on the regular rates.

I was in the St. Regis Metropolitan Suite last May and it was a nice room with full dining room table, couch, large window views towards the Bay Bridge and baseball park. Wonderful amenities.
