'1' Hotel To Add a Little More Green in Bryant Park

New York's hotel scene is finally getting hip to this up-and-coming Green movement we haven't heard much about.

Yesterday, the Starwood Capital Group under Barry Sternlicht announced plans to build a 1 Hotel in an empty parking lot on West 40th Street between Fifth and Sixth Avenues near Bryant Park. The 31-story building will have hotel rooms, condos, and a restaurant from Blue Water Grill's Stephen Hanson. Starwood is seeking Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design certification. LEED is the generally accepted code from the U.S. Green Building Council.

While every company -- from Continental Airlines to Goldman Sachs -- is heeding the PR staff and slapping a green label on its product, NYC lacks environmentally friendly, five-star hotel accommodations. But once 2010 rolls around, the Starwood establishment will open and the center of the universe will offer a high-end hotel that recycles. Way to stay ahead of the curve.

The first "1" is set to open in Seattle in 2008 and will also be environmentally friendly but the features granting 1 Bryant Park its emerald hue will include: recycled and local building materials; Energy Star appliances; occupancy sensors and lighting control systems that minimize energy use; low or minimal volatile emissions; renewables such as wind, hydro and biomass for half the power usage; and reduced potable water use.
