But having a lot of history does not always make a hotel a good place to stay. One result is that half of its rooms still have shared bathrooms, and none of them have telephones or televisions. We can only guess there's just no good spot to put the TV in a room designed in the 1800s. Another drawback highlighted by the LA Times is the distance from the Wawona to the main attractions in Yosemite.
This distance (about 27 miles) is not such a drama if you come into Yosemite from the south--you'll find the Wawona about 4 miles in. There are also other good points that come from being old: it's got a lot of character and a lot of space around it, enough space in fact for a nine-hole golf course.
In the high season (that's September and October plus the usual holiday weekends) a room with a private bathroom will set you back $183 a night--this drops to $126 if you can put up with sharing a bathroom, so that's quite a saving for a couple of showers.
