London's Swinging Hotel Scene: Break Out Your Tennis Whites

June 27, 2007 at 9:15 AM | by juliana | 0 Comments

This week we are focusing on the latest news and reviews on the London Hotel Scene. We'll be looking at budget hotels, Wimbledon hotels, The Concert for Diana hotels and more. So if you've got a London hotel story or query, then c'mon now--fill us in.

The Wimbledon Tournament has begun again and if you're a tennis fan looking to study the pro's precise volleys and high-speed serves, then you should have booked a hotel a long time ago.

Not only is Wimbledon a major sporting event which means hotels sell out fast, it's also located in the suburbs of London and the only options are small B&Bs or budget hotel chains. And these are the first to go.

There's also no easy way to get there. The nearest tube stop is the Southfields station and that's still a 15-minute walk from the stadium, so says the TripAdvisor Insider guide to Wimbledon.

Nevertheless, we'll sum up some hotel options for when you go next year.

MORE

The Wimbledon Hotel
78 Worple Rd, Wimbledon, London, SW19 4HZ

This is the first result that came up for us when searching for Wimbledon hotels. Whoever named this place gets a gold star. But we like it for it's free wireless internet, eco-friendly products, free parking, and flat-screen TVs.

It almost sounds too good to be true and since we can't find the hotel on TripAdvisor, nor can we find any other reviews, we think it might be.

The Travelodge London Wimbledon
A24 Epsom Road, Morden, Surrey London SM4 5PH

A popular stop because it's right near Wimbledon. There are no rooms available now and interestingly enough, no good reviews on the place.

Holiday Inn Express Wimbledon
00 High Street | Colliers Wood, South Wimbledon, London SW19 2BH, England

Again, no rooms available.

The Best Western London Lodge
52-54 Upper Richmond Road, Putney, London, SW15 2RN

Advertises the Wimbledon Tennis stadium as one underground stop away. For now, it's booked through July 7th. But when rooms open up again on July 8, they are running around 75 pounds.

Novotel London Euston
100 - 110 Euston Road, London, NW1 2AJ

So technically, this isn't a close hotel to Wimbledon but someone has stayed here while attending the matches.

Blogger Matt Morelli who wrote about the first couple of days at Wimbledon on his blog Here to Geneva, stayed at the Novotel and said the hotel was very good.

Here is his take on the area:

The hotel is a 5 minute walk from Euston station to the west and Kings Cross St Pancras to the east....The hotel itself is right on the Euston Road which is very busy pretty much all day. If you’re a light sleeper, you will definitely want a room at the back of the hotel (even if you’re not, I’d advise a room at the back anyway).

The other options are whatever else strikes your fancy in London town. But perhaps there is room for an easyHotel or a Yotel over in Wimbledon?

Send us your Wimbledon hotel suggestions if you got 'em.
