What is the 'W The Card' For?

June 26, 2007 at 9:15 AM | by | Comments (3)

That's what we're asking ourselves after visiting the dedicated W The Card web site. We tried to sneak into the members-only site but couldn't brute force it.

Just as we were giving up, a spy tipped us off to what's behind the curtain:

Basically, it seems that you get some sort of priority as a guest of the W when making dinner reservations and you get access to the discotheques. If you check out the VIP card web site there's a lot on there about what you DONT get. Lame.

Looks to us like it's a move toward dividing you between your Starwood guest points and a W loyalty program. If that's the case, then our spy has it right: Lame.

Re: What is the 'W The Card' For?

Thanks for this bit of info. I signed up for this card the day their website came out - and I have not heard a thing. I have a SPG membership and i have stayed at the W a number of times - still nada.

Goldmember thing?

I wonder if you have to be an upper echelon SPG member i.e. Gold to get one of these cards?

Re: What is the 'W The Card' For?

I have been a W Card holder for approximately 1 year.  You don't sign up for the card.  You are randomly selected for the card based on your W stay frequency.  Only about 3000 members have the card. I've only been able to see what the card can do once staying at the W San Diego.  It's got some pros:  Free Voss Water and 2 drink tickets to the W Bar downstairs from the GM, maybe some chocolates....  haven't really had to use the VIP status for going to any clubs, but may use that later this year in New Orleans.  I would actually prefer if this card had only one sole purpose rather than the free small stuff.... which would be to guarantee an upgrade in room.  And wishfully thinking that being a gold member already gives you that opportunity, this would make it guaranteed.... but this card does not do that.  So overall.... its nice to have those LITTLE extras, but for the sake of your arguments, they (Starwood) have indeed exaggerated its benefits as mentioned.
