The Watergate complex has never been much to look at, a near-miss of mid-20th century modernism that looks moderately tired on better days, hopelessly outdated on its worst. Inside is another story. Hotel rooms are sumptuous and spacious. Those that look out onto the Potomac River are uplifting, and remind guests that while Washington may technically be landlocked, it's got a body of water it calls its own. There's a path along the river that's great for strolling, jogging and biking. Rooms that face northwest have a great view of Georgetown to the northwest and, depending on the flight pattern, low-flying planes making their last turn into Reagan National Airport.
Going into the renovation, the Watergate could use an injection of amenities. There's no pool. The outdoor one is for condominium residents. The hotel closed mosaic-walled indoor pool several years ago. (It would be fun to see that return.) There's no spa, either. Guests could always stroll over to the Watergate Salon, where they might see Condaleeza Rice, who lives in the complex, getting a treatment. Aquarelle, the hotel restaurant, will remain open during the makeover.
Political scandals dog the Watergate. Last year, California congressman was accused of having trysts between a Californian congressman and hookers. The Watergate was a footnote in the Monica Lewinsky affair. She lived in her mother's Watergate condominium while interning in the Clinton White House. Even the Watergate's architect, the renowned Italian Luigo Moretti, had political baggage. Early in his career, he worked for Mussolini.
