[Ed. Note: Hotel Maven Barbarab has the scoop on this infamous D.C. Hotel.]

The Watergate Hotel is closing this summer for renovations. Details - how major? how long? -- are sketchy. The hotel's website currently is not taking reservations past June 30. The front desk confirms as much by phone.

The hotel, part of the complex known round the world as the scene of the crime that brought down Richard Nixon, nearly closed for good several years ago. In 2004, D.C.-based Monumental Realty acquired the hotel and announced it was converting its 250-some rooms to 100-ish luxury condominiums. The deal fell through after current condominium residents protested.

Long a favorite with celebrities, especially artists performing at the nearby Kennedy Center, the hotel has been languishing in a scandal-cachet funk. Décor has relied on a mix of Georgian-inspired furniture in some rooms, cleaner, more contemporary lines in others. Upscale and sumptuous but not hip, the play-it-safe sensibility fit Washington to a T.

The Watergate complex has never been much to look at, a near-miss of mid-20th century modernism that looks moderately tired on better days, hopelessly outdated on its worst. Inside is another story. Hotel rooms are sumptuous and spacious. Those that look out onto the Potomac River are uplifting, and remind guests that while Washington may technically be landlocked, it's got a body of water it calls its own. There's a path along the river that's great for strolling, jogging and biking. Rooms that face northwest have a great view of Georgetown to the northwest and, depending on the flight pattern, low-flying planes making their last turn into Reagan National Airport.

Going into the renovation, the Watergate could use an injection of amenities. There's no pool. The outdoor one is for condominium residents. The hotel closed mosaic-walled indoor pool several years ago. (It would be fun to see that return.) There's no spa, either. Guests could always stroll over to the Watergate Salon, where they might see Condaleeza Rice, who lives in the complex, getting a treatment. Aquarelle, the hotel restaurant, will remain open during the makeover.

Political scandals dog the Watergate. Last year, California congressman was accused of having trysts between a Californian congressman and hookers. The Watergate was a footnote in the Monica Lewinsky affair. She lived in her mother's Watergate condominium while interning in the Clinton White House. Even the Watergate's architect, the renowned Italian Luigo Moretti, had political baggage. Early in his career, he worked for Mussolini.
