The Ameritania Hotel in Manhattan evacuated guests last night due to a small fire in the hotel's luggage storage room.

Four civilians and four firefighters were treated for minor injuries, fire officials said. Some people, wearing oxygen masks, were taken out of the Ameritania Hotel on stretchers.

"We were sleeping and it was probably about 2:30; we hear the sirens going off," said Jason Ledford, a hotel guest, speaking to WCBS-TV. "Thought it was like a trash truck picking some stuff up. And looked out the window and there was smoke going on."

He then peeked out his hotel room door and saw people evacuating. "Me and my fiancee decided we'd better follow suit and take off," he said.

The fire was under control by 3:17a.m. but it has not been determined what started the fire.

We used to like the Ameritania because it was a Times Square hotel that you could stay in without "getting killed, mugged, or infected" which technically is still true but possible evacuation due to fire definitely subtracts points.

No!  Not the Ameritania.  Imagine having to stand outside the Letterman theater at 3:30 in the morning.
