[Ed. Note: Contributing editor Tim Leffel reports from Little Rock, Arkansas.]

When a group of eight travel writers arrives at a hotel together from the airport, with reservations, it's never a good sign when there's not a bellhop to be found. Not that the writers can't fend for themselves, of course, but you'd think a hotel hosting a whole crew of influencers would schedule an extra staffer or two to juice the first impression. But this is the Peabody Little Rock, not the storied Peabody in Memphis. It's the equivalent of the high school football captain's little brother, trying hard, but no hope of matching up.

First of all, this is a modern atrium hotel, so they can never match the elegance and historic embellishments of the original Peabody in Memphis. Second, let's be real--we are talking about Little Rock, Arkansas. The Clinton Presidential Center is certainly an impressive and well-designed attraction, but an urban hotspot this city is not. So management can be forgiven for ratcheting down the staff-to-guest ratio and relying on the impressive lobby and waddling ducks in the fountain to awe the visitors.

Then there are the views, though, which are great from almost every room. The higher the better, but in general the odd number rooms face the city and the Clinton Library, while the even ones face the river (as pictured here) and the new minor league baseball stadium in North Little Rock. The staff that is on duty is polished and professional and issues generally get resolved quickly--like when our key suddenly stopped working on day 2 and the night manager went up the elevator with us to ensure the new one did the trick.

Guests used to major market business hotels may be disappointed in some aspects, however, especially when it comes to the rooms. No robes, no coffee makers, no ergonomic desk chairs, and no WiFi--though a big round of applause for making wired Internet complimentary and making WiFi in the lobby gratis. The scaled-back rooms probably have something to do with the fact that there are 418 of them and then there is the hotel's neighbor: a huge convention center.

Until the historic Capital Hotel under renovation is open again--which looked to us like no earlier than 2008--the Peabody is the only game in town at the upper end of the scale in Little Rock. While it may be an also-ran compared to its Memphis sibling, it's also far cheaper: online rates start at under $160 a night.

Re: Peabody Little Rock

While this hotel doesn't have the age of it's Memphis big brother, it's still historic... it's the place where Paula Jones was taken upstairs by the Arkansas state troopers to meet then Governor Bill Clinton. If you don't think that history was made in that hotel room just ask Al Gore.

I didn't stay at the Peabody during my one visit to Little Rock. I did however turn around to find Paula Jones standing next to me at the baggage area of the Little Rock Airport. I think I would have rather seen the ducks.

Ducks

what is up with this hotel chain and their ducks. there is a random story about the duck keeper at the memphis location here.

thanks to ajb for awesome late 1990s history lesson! paula jones, those were days...

the history of the ducks

It goes back to the 1930's at the orginal Memphis hotel where as a prank the live decoy hunting ducks of the GM were put into the lobby fountain. The guests liked it and it grew into this whole elaborate ceremony where the ducks are walked from their rooftop penthouse to the lobby each morning and back again each night. People come from all over just to watch the ducks. It's like the changing of the guard at Buckingham Palace.  There is a more detailed history on the Peabody Memphis website:

Re: Peabody Little Rock an Under-Achieving Little

Wow. I'm not coming to the defense of this hotel by any means. It just happens to be the first one I've read on your cutesy little website. Jesus. Consider your tone, Editors. You guys sound like jaded children who got their second choice for a Christmas present. Grow up.

Just Curious, beatpimp...

In your profile you say you are a travel professional...can you go into a bit more detail?  Are you a travel agent?  Hospitality worker?  Context would be helpful and might explain some things.  Let us know here if you get a chance.
