A number of months back I wrote about the ongoing renovations at the Sheraton Waikiki and how to avoid "renovation gotcha." In a nutshell, the old rooms were bad and were all beneath the 13th floor.

As I reported in that post, I knew the resort was quickly renovating all its rooms -- or so I thought. A press release and some news article crossed my inbox a week ago touting the completion of room renovations at the Sheraton Waikiki, the largest single-building hotel in the Hawaiian Islands. (With so many rooms, clearly the potential for unhappy vacationers stuck in 1970s-era room decor is high).

I called the front desk on a whim and they told me that, contrary to the tenor of the release, renovations had only made it down to the sixth floor. Which means less renovation gotcha but still plenty to p.o. a honeymooner.

What's more, the Annex -- the ugly stepchild of the Sheraton Waikiki -- remains untouched and its rooms are akin to the closet-sized staff rooms that can be found at the Waldorf Astoria in NYC.

Six floors of renovation hell are better than 12, particularly considering that the renovated rooms are really nice and worth tussling with a reservations or front desk dude over. But the renovation ain't over until the last floor is done, no?

Sheraton Waikiki Annex

Aloha.  From what I understand the Annex was previously used to house airline employees, but once the airline folded they used it as part of the hotel.  At last check the owners are not sure what to do with the Annex and has left it as is until some form of idea forms.  Sad but true.
