Inside Hotel Tomo in San Francisco's Japantown

Yesterday, we got an inside look at what's happening with JDV Hospitality in our one-on-one with CEO Chip Conley. (If you haven't seen his video clip yet, click here. It will make you smarter. Promise.)

Conley is planning on opening up 10 hotels in the next year, including four of which are old hotels that JDV is rebranding. One of these four is the former Best Western Miyako Inn in San Francisco's Japantown. The hotel got recognition first thanks to the JDV Name that Hotel Contest. And the winner was...Hotel Tomo.. According to the press release, Tomo, which means "adventurous" was suggested by:

Tomo Kakegawa, an individual who was also ‘awarded’ his name from his great grandfather. “My great grandfather, Tomoyasu, left Japan to become a fisherman in Canada. His adventurous spirit lives on in his name…and in me,” Kakegawa said. “I believe this will translate well to the hotel – where people will visit on their own adventures. Not only will the name inspire friendliness, I am hoping that like my grandfather, the hotel’s visitors will see a different aspect of Japanese culture which is edgy…adventurous.”

So the hotel is going to be a combination of traditional Japanese culture and some serious Japanime decor. The hotel is expected to open June 1.
