If you're looking for a central but not bank-breaking stay in Sydney, the Mercure Hotel Sydney always seems like a good bet. The location is ideal, really close to the central railway station and bus depot, and it's also walking distance close to Darling Harbour and Circular Quay where you can get your fill of plenty of Sydney sightseeing hotspots.

Rack rates may not be bargains but if you keep an eye on their website you can often pick up some good deals; at the moment their Hot Deal rate goes for A$139 (US$115) a night for a standard room, although this is a strict no-cancellation, no-change price. Friendly staff and good deals are the main pluses thrown up by recent guest reviews.

Unfortunately the Mercure Sydney briefly hit the headlines last week with a story about the night staff getting robbed by two men wielding samurai swords; but it won't dent the profits (or the possibilities of cheap rooms) too much as they only got away with a small pile of cash.
