Our fearless and roadtrip lover Jaunted editor Davie was once again trolling up and down the East Coast (in a good way we mean) and spied this fugly hotel on her way. Here's what she says:

I was driving up the Mass Turnpike this weekend and as I was approaching this monstrosity, I was taken aback by its sheer fugliness. At first, I couldn't tell what it was. Abandoned prison? Decrepit animal hospital imported whole from Moldova?

Then, I thought to myself, I bet it's an old, neglected Sheraton in Newton. And I guessed right. The building is so unattractive. I was poking around online today and decided to see if the TripAdvisor reviews would reflect what I suspected about the place.

Sho'nuff, they are mostly notsogood. I would take the exterior of the Westin Times Square over this one any day.

Picture of another fugly Sheraton after the jump.

This is a picture we snapped of the Sheraton Gateway Hotel near the Los Angeles airport. Sheraton must have been in a "Let's put hotels in building that look like prisons and/or Moldova animal hospitals" mood back in the early 80s or something.

And yes, if you've been following us today we are doing some not-so-discreet foreshadowing.

Hugly Newton Sheraton (none / 0)

I am coining that term--tm, blah, blah blah.  Anyway, this hugly Sheraton is a Mass Pike legend.  Your drive past Fenway, then the toll (i think) then under the big hugly Sheraton.  Suddenly, and somewhat magically, you begin to think it is 1982...

That thing is a beast.

The fugly Sheraton in Newton is directly over the Massachusetts Turnpike.  To its credit, however, it wasn't built as a Sheraton.  It opened in the late 60's as a Howard Johnson's.

I've stayed at this hotel and you cannot miss it if you are on the Mass Pike. The hotel sits on piers suspended across interstate AND the NYC-Boston amtrak rail line. To make things even worse once you get off the highway, you find out that the hotel is in the middle of a traffic circle for local Newton traffic. Cars driving around the hotel and cars going under the hotel at the same time.

Some employees told me that to do plumbing repair in the kitchen they have had to shut the highway down in the past.

You get a choice of a north highway view or a south highway view at this place. My room was very small and even on the upper floors you can still hear some road noise if you don't have the tv or radio on in your room. Woosh! Woosh!

And then you haven't really had the most fun this place can dish out until you are sitting in the dinning room on the first floor of the building and the high speed Acela train goes roaring underneath you at top speed. You feel like you should pick your feet up off the floor just in case.
