[Ed. Note: Hotel Maven Contractor1803 has a hotel hell report from Dubai. Here's his story below. As always, this is one person's side of the story. If you feel differently, let us know. Enjoy.]

I recently had the displeasure of staying at the Mayfair Hotel in Dubai. This semblance of a hotel should be avoided by anyone seeking an enjoyable hotel experience. From the car that failed to meet me at the airport as promised, to the snotty front desk attendant, I had a thoroughly unenjoyable time. I booked my hotel through Asiatravel.com, and planned to have an enjoyable break from my work in Afghanistan. Boy was I surprised!

Just a few quick facts about this supposedly 4 Star Hotel:

· They advertised a Russian Disco and Restaurant in the hotel. Even though there advertisements concerning the disco and restaurant in the lobby, the elevator and my room, I found that neither of these had been open in some time.

· During my entire five day stay, the soap and other toileteries were never replenished.

· The mini-bar did not contain the items that the inventory sheet stated were in the mini-bar.

· The mini-bar was never replenished during my stay, but a rather attentive young man showed up to take inventory four minutes after my wake-up call on my departure date.

· The advertised pool bar was an empty kiosk, holding court over stained and filthy furniture.

· I complained about a tour that went wrong, and the manager told me that he wasn't responsible for the tour group that operated in his lobby!

· I attempted to acquire a cash advance of my VISA Card, and was refused at the front desk. When I asked for the directions to the local Western Union, my request was refused.

· I had planned on taking a guest to the rooftop bar for a drink, and was accosted by a rude young clerk, who told me that guests (of hotel guests) were not allowed in the hotel.

· I tried to hail a cab and was accosted by a young man from the hotel, who offered to give me a lift (for three times the cab price). When I said that I would take a cab, he made clear attempts to wave cabs away from me.

· My complimentary ride to the airport was not forthcoming on my departure date, but surprise, a cab was waiting for me!

I have filed a complaint with Asiatravel.com, who I found maintains an office within two miles of the Mayfair Hotel. My mail has not been answered.

Beware of the Mayfair Hotel and Asiatravel.com. Their only interest is to separate you from your money as quickly as possible.

Strict coming and going policies in Dubai?

That the hotel wouldn't allow guests of guests to enter reminded me of the Papers Checkers at the Burj Al Arab where they checked your passport constantly...
