W Hotels Coming to Puerto Rico

Where: Puerto Rico

April 10, 2007 at 3:18 PM | 1 Comment

Nearly two years ago, W Hotels announced that they were opening up shop in Vieques, Puerto Rico. Now we learn that the W Hotel will reopen in the Martineau Bay Resort & Spa after it undergoes a an $18 million dollar renovation in 2008.

But surprising for a W, the hotel was set to be finished in Fall 2006 but was pushed back. One possible reason? W Hotels is also renovating the The Normandie Hotel which is expected to open in December 2007.

This W will include a new pool area, a Bliss spa and a signature restaurant. Oddly enough, W Hotels web site makes no mention of either Puerto Rico property only listing the W Doha, W Ft. Lauderdale and the W Hoboken as their upcoming hotels. Hmmm...read that sentence again. Doha, Ft. Lauderdale and Hoboken. Yup, W has run out of cool places.

    WANTED- Vieques Stories

I've watched the W property on Vieques go through 10 years of renovations, negotiations, deals gone bad, real estate stolen by the local government and wiped away by storms. They've hired everyone on the island and then fired them. Multiple times. No one trusts that they'll ever really open or stay open because there's always a new management team and no one ever understands the local culture until it's too late. Vieques won't be ready for a mega resort like this for at least another 20-30 years, about 2 generations Puerto Rican time.

Currently I am putting together a collection of short stories from Vieques Island Service Industry workers. People like myself with real stories about life on the island, untainted by sales-pitch rhetoric.

If you have ever lived and worked in the tourism industry of Vieques Island, you are encouraged to make a submission. Please visit the Vieques Stories website for more information: http://viequesstories.com
