André Balazs Dark Hotel Secret

March 7, 2007 at 5:04 PM | by juliana | 1 Comment

Looks like asking you folks to join the HotelChatter Flickr Pool yesterday did us some good. We got a bunch of new photos which we plan on posting this week, starting with this set from Flickr member Lucifer Bumps. So c'mon in and get your hotel photos published.

When we think of André Balazs our first thought tends to be uber-successful hotelier (Uma Thurman comes in a close second.) The QT and Mercer in New York, The Standard in Miami, all get high marks from the Hotel Mavens, and Miami's Raleigh Hotel is one of our personal favorites--all these hotels are AB Hotels.

But André has another little-known property out on New York's Shelter Island called Sunset Beach and judging from these pictures, it's clear why Sunset Beach isn't promoted as heavily as the other AB properties, it isn't in their league. We have come to expect a certain level of excellence from AB Hotels, but according to our tipsters, that level is missing at Sunset Beach.

More pictures after the jump.

Flickr member Lucifer Bumps stayed at the hotel last June and was thoroughly disappointed with the room's furnishings, especially since he was forking over $300+ a night. Here are his photos and his words:

Those pock marks are all small cigarette burns, many cushions in most rooms have them.

That rubberized hideous orange paint again. Basically what is happening here is that when housekeeping cleans a glass a little moisture is still in it and when turned upside down on a paper coaster, it gets the coaster stuck to the vanity. Remember this is early in the season for a seasonal resort so this should have been fixed.

This kitchenette is from probably 1970, André Balazs was a designer or something right? Funny part is he lives on the island, you would think he would be ashamed to walk around.

Look at the television. I know you're at the beach so you should be outside, but how can you check the beach weather when your TV only broadcasts from 1980?

Since its off-season now, we are hoping AB is planning an overhaul of this place before Memorial Day, or maybe it is time to just unload this joint.

Really, truly... What AB hotel were you staying in? I would say that an exceptional AB experience is more exception than rule.

I used to work for them-- it's all fake. By the end of my tenure there, I was so cynical about it that I felt the need to point out to everyone who would come in all bright-eyed into the lobby where things were falling apart.

I guess it's no wonder why I got fired.
