Already, tips are coming in from readers about their favorite Geek Hotels. Like this one from Flickr member Dead Squid:

My fave geek hotel would have to be the Hotel Avante in Mountain View, CA. No flat panel TV, but retro styling, comfy chairs, solid network connectivity, daily beer busts (ok, cocktails) in the foyer, a HiFi room where you can get out of your room to listen to music, loaner CDs, and a useful desk with something other than a Gideon's bible make for a very, very pleasant stay.

The proximity to Silicon Valley also has a sufficient geek quotient. And notice in the desk, a mini-etch a sketch, a slinky, a yo-yo and of course the geeky Rubick's cube. What? No Casio calculator watches?

Re: Geek Hotel Tip: Hotel Avante

Ever since I saw Pursuit Of Happyness I have wanted another shot at Rubik's Cube.

dearth of geek hotels in san fran

don't you think there needs to be the west coast version of Hotel @ MIT in s. valley or san fran? it's kind of sad that there is really nothing good out there.

Re: Geek Hotel Tip: Hotel Avante

Hotel@Caltech anyone? Or would the students' radioactive brain waves burn holes in the beds? Probably not safe.

Re: Geek Hotel Tip: Hotel Avante

Avante has flatscreens (and very nice ones) now.

Besides the mid-century modern style, the free -- and substantial -- breakfast is a high point. The only downside to Avante is sometimes thin walls and floors; if you have a loud (or heavy) neighbour, you'll know it.

Retro games

Hotel Avante seems to be more of a retro hotel rather than a geek hotel. I'm not sure I'd give Rubik's Cube much use though - I always found the quickest way to do it was to take all of the stickers off and put them back on in the right order! I'm surprised Apple haven't opened a hotel in the area as it's only a stones throw from their HQ in Cupertino. I can imagine an iMac and Apple TV in every room, a free iPhone3GS for the duration of your stay and a complete ban on PC related items! I guess the design style would be pretty minimalist as well (but not the price). Here's hoping! Chris Jones.
