One Person Is Very Unhappy About the Future of the Hotel Riverview

Where: 113 Jane Street [map], New York, ny, United States, 10014

With the confirmation that hoteliers Eric Goode and Sean MacPherson have purchased the old Hotel Riverview with hopes of turning it into a boutique hotel, let's take a moment to reflect that not everyone is crazy about a shiny new hotel in the West Village.

Brian Mercer who tipped us off that the hotel was full for "Janis Joplin" has some warnings for Goode and MacPherson, indeed for all hoteliers in NYC who dare to charge $300 a night.

I am so sad this place is going and I WANT TO KNOW WHO IS GOING TO STOP THIS SINCE IT IS A LANDMARK HOTEL AND HISTORICALLY PROTECTED.

Yeah, the all caps is his not ours. As you can see he's pissed. And he believes that if Manhattan keeps raising its hotel prices then travelers might stay away for good. So who shall win this war--An actor or a team of men who have successfully established hotels and restaurants across the city? Our bet is that Mercer will put up a fight. Hmm...Freedom's just another word for nothing left to lose.

The full letter is after the jump.

From Brian Mercer:

I want you to consider adding this to your chatter. I stayed a week at a time at least ten times over many years and never had any trouble at the Riverview Hotel in New York on Jane Street. In fact, I can attribute my performance career budding in NY because of the opportunity to be at this place.

First, the staff was incredibly nice, hard working, and quite international. No one who seemed to be "out of it" was allowed to come into much less rent at the hotel. Yes, there were a few "regulars" who were perhaps challenged but they never gave me a hard time. The place was not noisy on most occasions.

The lack of cleanliness was not a result of poor housekeeping for their staff scrubbed and rubbed and hauled and mopped and emptied trash all around the clock. I saw them. They worked tirelessly without much thanks. When I greeted them, made them laugh or gave them a soda or a piece of fruit or a small tip they were genuinely touched and kind. I am so sad this place is going and I WANT TO KNOW WHO IS GOING TO STOP THIS SINCE IT IS A LANDMARK HOTEL AND HISTORICALLY PROTECTED/

The long term people should be helped get a place since if they are handicapped, aged, etc, they need help. This should be a part of the sales agreement.

I am going to call the G. V. Historical Society and the Villager Newspaper to get an inquiry going. I do not feel the world owes anybody anything but it is ridiculous to think all honest and good people coming into the city can afford $300 and up a night just to sleep. I never needed anything more than a bed and shower...it is like a death in the family.

Well, what goes around comes around and soon this rapacious rise in hotel prices will make it universal in the common travelers knowledge "DON'T GO TO NY AGAIN YOU CAN'T SLEEP THERE.' This will translate into all sorts of other economic losses for restaurants, trinkets, transportation etc. Eventually the prices will go down but by then many of us loyal expatriates and nyc lovers will be dead.

What do you think of the plans for Hotel Riverview? Let us know.

    here is the truth

This comment represents and speaks for all the tenants of "the jane hotel" formally known as the " hotel riverview". Only a small percent of us are left after a year of major harassment consisting of construction, bed bugs, rats and mice. sean macphearson and eric goode do not have any regards for humane rights and that is a fact. We have had to live with that fact, but not for long
