New Years Eve Hotels: Feliz Año Nuevo en Madrid

Where: Madrid, Spain

by femmefatale | December 27, 2007 at 12:55 PM | 2 Comments

Come New Year, the Spaniards have an excellent custom to celebrate this momentous (well okay, annual) occasion. They fill their mouths with grapes - one for each and every clang of the bell at midnight - then rush around to kiss each other Happy New Year and quirt grape juice over everyone's cheeks. And Spanish supermarkets haven't heard of seedless grapes....

Join in the New Year fun in Madrid - here's our roving Europe correspondent Monica Guy's top three choices for where to stay.

1. De Las Letras: De Las Letras is a real paradox of a hotel. Stunningly trendy, colour-contrasting interior décor intermingles with period statues, a 19th-century exterior and a Turkish hamam.

Spend New Year on the rooftop terrace peering up at the stars or in the much-talked-about restaurant. You're a few steps away from Madrid's upmarket bars and restaurants so you'll have no trouble finding chums with which to celebrate.

Double rooms from €110 ($155) for two people per night.

2. Hotel Urban
We're talking modern art-deco luxury in the 5-star Urban, part of the Derby hotel chain. All leather and mahogany and low lighting. We're talking fattening the turkey as well, in the gourmet Europa Déco restaurant and slippery glass oyster bar. Better to sit on the terrace with a warm coat and a cocktail - it's a mecca for trend-setting Madrileños even if they're not staying at the place.

The website claims there are "no set rules" but that's not strictly true - there's a pretty strict limit on how many people can afford to stay here regularly. Splash out for New Year's Eve with a deluxe room, costing 548 ($790) for the two of your for a night. It only happens once a year.

3. Petit Palace Puerta del Sol
We find the Petit Palace Embassy a bit lacking in atmosphere - too much expensive glitz and not enough hair-down fun. Try her smaller sister Petit Palace Puerta del Sol instead - she's cheaper and more up for a night on the town. She's right in the centre of things and loves the attention, even though apart from the showers there's not much to shout about at any other time of the year. Prices for a standard double room for one night start at €120 ($170).

Yes, De Las Letras does tend to fancy itself a bit....or maybe the web manager fancies himself a bit too much.

I knew the hotel before seeing the website, and trust me, it's a lot better!
