HotelChatter || Semi Stream of Conciousness Hotel Review: The Roman Tower at Caesars

The original Roman Tower opened in 1966 and while there has definitely been an interior update or two since the, the guest rooms in this tower feel very, um, ancient Rome -- emphasis on the ancient. Sure there are large open baths, just like in ancient Rome right? However, if you are expecting interiors from post 1982, or hair dryers from post 1982 for that matter, you best be staying at a more recently constructed Caesars tower.

Check In
Get ready to wait in a Vegas size queue to check in. The line moves faster than the LAS cab line, but slower than the lunchtime line at Quizno's. Interesting hotel tech note: Caesars scans your license so if you drunkenly ask for a new key during your stay they have your photo id on file -- very smart.

Common Areas
In order to get to the Roman Tower you have to walk straight through the casino floor -- surprise!

Room Reaction
Room 686 straight out of 1982. Old carpet, old boxy television, oh and ladies, the hairdryer is an tiny old Conair unit, smaller than a fist. Looks like it couldn't dry a damp cat let alone a woman's hair.

Furthermore, take a look at the photo of the doorway (above). Yes, the front door pretty much clips the bathroom door as you enter your room.

The best part of the room is the oversized bath with both separate shower and tub. Those Romans dug on the communal bath thing right? Either that or giant baths were big in the eighties.

Property
Caesar's is *huge*, of course, and it was too cold in Vegas to check out the pool area. However, with Pure, plenty of shopping and the best sports book in Vegas, Caesar's is definitely a place to visit if not stay at while in Sin City.

WiFi
In-room wireless is $11.99 a night. Room 686 had a strong four bars of WiFi throughout our visit, however, the room was a power outlet wasteland. No outlets near the desk, meant we had to use the one outlet near the bed and prop up the ironing board as a desk.

Service
The housekeeping service was relatively quick for Vegas, but overall the service here did nothing to impress nor depress. So if you judge service like you judge a good baseball umpire, meaning the best ones go unnoticed, you should be fine with the service level at Roman Tower.

Location
It is on the strip, and extremely centrally located. Actually one of the biggest advantages of staying at Caesars is that it is a very popular hotel for visitors, so in a way, some of the action comes to you.

View
Ok it is Vegas, we expect a view of gray rooftops, however, this gray rooftop view had a twist! Peering construction workers on a catwalk. Caesars is building a new tower and if you stay in rooms facing the construction you might be lucky enough to make eye contact with one of the workers, if you leave your blinds open.

Cost
Luckily for us our room was comped by the conference we were in town for, but the room rate was $159, which while on the lower end of rates, wouldn't you rather stay at the brand new Palazzo for $199? We would.

Bottom Line
Our guess is there are some extremely fine rooms at Caesar's, but not inside the Roman Tower. Unless you want to relieve the days of giant cell phones and eighties hair, all while being watched through your window by laughing construction workers, skip it.
