Fancy a Mexican getaway? The Deseo Hotel in Playa del Carmen should fit the bill nicely, combining the feel of an old Caribbean fishing village with all the modern conveniences (and luxuries) that one could expect from a Design Hotel.

Situated along the Mayan Riviera a destination famed for its stunning archeological ruins and superior scuba diving, the spot now boasts a new attraction in the form of this fabulous hotel. The product of young architectural company Central de Arquitectura, the most striking feature of the establishment is undoubtedly the pool area, an idyllic retreat for mind and body furnished with Chechen wood day beds draped in cool white curtains to take the edge off that Yucatan sun.

It's the perfect place to enjoy post beach cocktails from the adjacent Deseo Lounge. Prices range from US $200 in the low season to $250 in the high season per night, with each room containing a king-size bed and the option of a private balcony with hammock. A "petit dejeuner" is complimentary.

I think it's important to note that Deseo is not actually on the beach.  It sits above the bustling pedestrian 5th ave.  They provide complimentary earplugs (and condoms) on the pillow, and you'll need them if you intend to turn in before 3a.m. as the rooms all open to the pool/bar area which is essentially an open air nightclub.
