The W Hotels' Mongolian Barbeque: Puma Sneakers Not Beef

November 27, 2007 at 12:13 PM | 2 Comments

Just a few weeks ago W Hotels launched a nifty little Mongolian Barbeque set for guests to play with in rooms but instead of cooking up meat, guests can create their own personalized Puma sneakers.

Here's our High Snobiety describes it:

Inspired by the tradition of creating personalized meals from a variety of ingredients, Puma's collection for W Hotels enables guests to become involved in the art of shoemaking; they can pick from a wide assortment of pre-cut materials to design their own individualized pair of shoes. Unique accoutrements, including special W shoelaces and insoles, add to the ultimate practical souvenir.

It's not quite an instant purchase. Once guests have selected the type of shoe they wish to create, they must visit the Puma Mongolian Shoe BBQ and order the kicks which range from $100 to $130. Then it takes six weeks for delivery. Basically, all W Hotels does i have its Whatever/Whenever service run the kit upstairs for you so you can design in the privacy of your guestroom.

If you are an obsessive fan of W Hotels (Andrew Calvo we mean you) and want to strut about in W-branded Pumas, you may be a bit disappointed. A spy on the streets in NYC headed to the W Union Square to inquire about the sneaker BBQ and said the head concierge was confused as to what she was talking about.

Once that was cleared up, she discovered the W branding is limited to the bottom sole, the lining and the thin laces. No mention of W Hotels on the actual shoe...which we think is a good thing, no?

I love W.. But I'm not quite sure I would wear W sneakers.. Plus, I've never spent more than $40 for a pair in my life.. (What can I say? I have a sweet spot for Payless)

    w shoelaces

do they still make shoelaces with your name or initials on it? you could get a pair with W all over it and that's probably cheaper.
