We have recovered enough from the Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino's Grand Opening weekend to bring you our Semi-Stream of Consciousness review about this new casino hotel on the Strip.
Sadly, the rooms were what we liked least about the hotel. The good news is everything else is rather exciting. And since Planet Hollywood has yet to reach astronomic Vegas room prices, the place is a deal for those obsessed with Hollywood culture and for anyone who enjoys good food, great shopping and a modern casino vibe.
See our full review after the jump.

Check-in: We arrived at 8:30pm on Friday night after a delayed flight from Miami so we were relieved to see that there was not one single person waiting at the front desk to check-in. Seriously, in Vegas this is an anomaly.
Upon check-in, we were told the only room left in the non-smoking section was a king room with disabled access. This we didn't mind. That meant a bigger bathroom. But we didn't think that the shower head might be a bit difficult to operate.
Still, the front desk clerk was helpful enough, even if it was difficult to hear him over the music. It could have been our still-clogged-from-the-flight ears though.
We also hit up the concierge who was one of those Travelocity concierges and made an appointment for dinner at Koi. Again, hard to hear but helpful still.
Room Reaction: The Planet Hollywood is obsessed with geometric shapes, especially circles (the shape of planets we gather). These can be found on the carpeting throughout, on the wallpaper, in the elevator and in the rooms on the ugly brown and light brown (?) rug.

Overall, we didn't think the decor was as sleek as it should be for this casino. It looks as if getting the Aladdin out of the room was hard to do. And someone told us the yellow and beige fat stripes on the wall are indeed left-over from the Aladdin. We don't know if that's true. It seems hard to believe that they would redo the carpets and not the walls.
True to the original idea of Planet Hollywood, each room has a piece of "memorabilia". Ours was a sweater (we think) that Tommy Lee Jones wore in a movie.

What We Liked: The ultra-comfortable bed, the flat-screen TV, and the complimentary Ok! Magazine.
What We Didn't Like: There was only a small closet in the entertainment center (we understand this comment now). The bathroom had only two body towels and it was very hard to squeeze out shampoo, conditioner and shower gel from the rectangular bottles. Also the bedside and floor lamps had to be turned on manually, there was no switch. Perhaps all this is why there are no room pics on the website.
Internet Connect: $12.95 a day for wired or wireless.
Dining: Planet Hollywood has some great dining options. As we mentioned yesterday, we loved Koi, the sushi restaurant. Yes, we loved the food but the space is also huge. You can eat the long sushi bar, or you can get drinks in the Koi lounge. For a special occasion, hit up the table that overlooks the strip where you have a prime view of the Bellagio fountains.
The Strip House is a great steak restaurant. The menu is not wildly different from other steakhouses and its at steakhouse prices but tasty nonetheless. Just think, why blow $100 on blackjack (which you can do it 10 minutes) when you can fill your belly with red meat and red wine? And besides looking at the pictures of half-naked women from the 1930s on the walls is not sleazy. Anything in black and white is classy, right?
For more casual options, the resort has a 24-hour diner, Planet Dailies and the Spice Market Buffet has been voted best buffet in Vegas already. The Earl of Sandwich has some decadent sandwiches which cured our hangover almost instantly. P.F. Chang is in the house as well as Pink's Hot Dogs, a popular hot dog stand from Los Angeles. There's also a Starbucks on the casino floor and don't forget the Hawaiian Tropic Zone in the Miracle Mile shops.
Spa: We spent five hours at the Mandara spa getting all kinds of treatments. Let's just say island life really ruins your nails. The spa has a Middle Eastern feel which worked when the casino was the Aladdin but now it will probably need a full-on face-lift. Microdermabrasion just won't do here.
That said, everyone at the spa (and for the most part, the rest of the casino) was extremely nice. Maybe this was because celebs were flitting about the spa but we felt as if their kindness was genuine. The spa and salon charges Las Vegas spa and salon prices--$45 for a manicure (!!) but any treatment gives you access to all of the spa facilities including the gym.

Entertainment: Hans Klock, the magician who features Pamela Anderson in his act, is the big ticket here, but there's also the show Stomp Out Loud in a smaller theater.
The resort also has two lounges--the Extra! Lounge and the Heart Bar. Plus a nightclub Prive is expected to open soon.
During the day, men can hit the Playing Field sports book while ladies do some damage at the Miracle Mile shops.

Casino: The casino area is rather small compared to some of the other strip hotels and we liked that. If we lost sight of the husband for a half-hour, it was very easy to find him as there aren't that many three-card poker tables.
We also liked the layout and the modern look. There were columns of light placed throughout and the casino was free of any cheesy themes or Italianate decor (except maybe the giant chandelier balls were a bit much.) And we thought the go-go girls dancing atop tables in the Pleasure Pit was a bit edgy.
We will say that the three levels of mezzanine, casino and lobby, were a tad annoying at times since in most Vegas casinos, the restaurants, casinos and nightclubs are all on the same floor. But there are escalators and elevators to make the go-between of floors a little easier.
Lastly, they pump great music throughout the casino. Yes, it may make it hard for you to hear but we thought it added to the party mood.
Bottom Line:We would definitely come back to Planet Hollywood for the food, the shopping at Miracle Mile, the spa and the table games. The rooms are pretty awful in our opinion but considering we hardly spent any time there, that didn't matter.
As with all of Vegas, rooms are cheap cheap cheap during the week at $89 a night. The weekend rates depend on what else is in town and range from $149 to $299.
