Hotels Flocking to Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport

Competition is heating up at Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport, where every hotel chain seems to want to open a hotel. The Hilton Amsterdam Airport Schiphol has been hanging out there for a while, but it's about to get a heap of company.

For one, the Yotel chain of airport capsule hotels plans to open a 56-room Yotel in Schiphol by the end of the year. It will be after passport control so transfer passengers can stay there without immigration problems, and passengers departing from Amsterdam with early morning flights will be able to check-in and go through passport control the night before.

Not so close to the departure gate but still near the airport, the Marriott chain will open a 318-room hotel under the Renaissance brand in 2009. Marriott considers Amsterdam one of Europe's most important hubs for air travel and wants to get a slice of the market for both air passengers and people doing business near the airport. There will be a shuttle bus from the new hotel into the city center, a journey of about 15 minutes.

Sheraton Schiphol Hotel Amsterdam (none / 0)

The Sheraton Schiphol is closer to the airport than the Hilton and can be reached from the airport without ever going outside.

I had a wonderful full suite at the Sheraton Schiphol about two years ago.  This hotel used to offer Arrivals with shower access and breakfast for United Airlines passengers flying in Business Class or First Class until that amenity was dropped by United a few years ago.

Last year I had a 9-night reservation at the Starwood's Amsterdam Pulitzer Hotel in the city and as a Starwood Preferred Guest platinum elite member I was given an arrivals amenity gift by the Pulitzer to use the shower and recreation facilities at the Sheraton Schiphol upon my early morning arrival (7am on the United flight).

My wife and I received key cards to the recreation area and there were lockers for our luggage (we only took carry-on size bags so it all fit in the narrow lockers).

There was a sauna, a relaxation room with colored tiles, fruit, magazines, and lounge chairs, the exercise room, pool and showers.

It was a fantastic way to arrive in Amsterdam and allowed us to refresh before heading to the Pulitzer Hotel.
