Ah, Six Columbus. We checked in on your seventh night, ready to tear you down after teasing us with opening rumors for years. But as it turns out, you really came through. From a good Midtown location to quality amenities to that Thompson Hotels cache, you did us right. Sure our room was small--check out the super-short video tour--and there were a couple of things that could've gone better. But for the rate we got? What a deal.

The Anti-View:
The biggest thing that bothered us about room 72 was the horrible view of a ventilation shaft. Not only was it ugly, it also made our room too dark. Of course, had we brought a young lady or lad home from A60, the low light would've kept things appropriately sexy.
Check-in and Service:
There isn't much to say about the staff other than they were helpful. Everyone had little Secret Service earbuds, which helped coordinate something, we suppose. Both check-in and check-out took just a few minutes and the front desk was handy with local area info.
Room Service:
Blue Ribbon Sushi Bar & Grill isn't open yet, so we weren't able to check out the restaurant scene or the room service. But the front desk did have recommendations for eats, and the Thai place they sent us to was excellent.
While we didn't find our room turned down, a call to the front desk had ice at our door in minutes. In the morning, the lobby had a light breakfast buffet from Bouchon Bakery across the way. (They love Bouchon, it seems.)
Design:
Overall, the hotel looks great, with cool colors and materials and a great look. The mod furniture and artwork are fun, and my room was cleverly put together, despite its small size. The lobby looked sharp, though there isn't a lot of public space on the ground floor.
Attention to detail is hit-and-miss. The "6" pattern in the carpet and the hassle-free minibar with tons of snacks are smart. But the flat screen TV is too fancy for the cable package, meaning parts of the picture are off-screen. The in-room safe is only big enough for small laptops. And in the shower, no soap dish means you're tossing water all over the bathroom to reach for your supplies.

Amenities:
Speaking of, they were nice. Soap, shampoo, conditioner and lotion were from Fresh, and they were quality.

The Minibar:
It was great. Lots of stuff was available, including Dean and Deluca snacks, top-shelf liquor and a "Shag Bag" with condoms, etc. It was a plain old fridge and a couple shelves: no fiddly automated system to worry about here.
WiFi:
Internet access was wide-open and free. Just boot up and surf away. All we needed was a little fold-out desk or something--or a bigger room than the pod we got for the night.

The Bed:
Was lovely. We got a little freaked out when we discovered noting but a duvet for a blanket. Yet seeing the housekeeping staff with a stack of duvet covers a few minutes later made us think things were clean enough to sleep on. Best endorsement we could give: It was awfully hard to roll over in the morning and fire up the laptop to start blogging.
