Now that we've had a chance to pour over Conde Nast's Readers' Choice Awards, we noticed an Oregon hotel that didn't pop up when we wandered through the Oregon Hotel Trail. The Stephanie Inn, say CNT's readers, is the third best hotel in the country, after the Chicago outposts of the Ritz-Carlton and The Peninsula.

So what makes it so special? Good question: CN Traveler doesn't spell out any details. And the survey is just a numerical ranking, leaving us curious as to what makes the Stephanie so praiseworthy. On Tripadvisor, reviewers come to a consensus:

This Inn is probably great if you can pay $600/night for a view room. It is also great if you like a lot of pretension. You will see more people here in slacks than in beach clothes and we were definitely the youngest people there.

The Stephanie certainly has a great view of Haystack Rock, but aside from that, we're just not seeing the appeal. Also, how can a hotel not have online reservations??

Re: What Makes Oregon's Stephanie Inn So Great? (none / 0)

I receive your daily email and find the bulk of your reviews interesting and informative, in particular the reviews that feature unbiased videos or photos.

When I looked at my own community of Cannon Beach, Oregon, I was surprised to read your piece about the Stephanie Inn. I felt that it lacked reasonable basis with the only reference being Trip Advisor comments, and one comment in particular from a single guest experience which seemed to sum up your feelings for our place, unfortunately without an experience of your own. The guest that posted the negative review on Trip Advisor spoke of a $600 per night room on the oceanfront, but I can assure you, the Stephanie Inn doesn't have a $600 room today. The 2nd floor Oceanfront Rooms start at $369 and go up to $429. These are high season rates for the coming year and I would let you know that specials abound in the shoulder and off season. Last week we featured oceanfront rooms at $199. We do have some specialty suites that run higher rates, but not even close to the $600 rate stated. Also to note, the guest room that the Trip Advisor reviewer stayed in featured a high season rate of $249.

I would be the first to say that there is no experience that I have ever had the pleasure of enjoying that I felt would appeal to all, and I won't begin to say that about the Stephanie Inn. It is a very special property with a focus on romance and I urge you to experience the resort for yourself. I think that you would find that the hotel has a unique charm that promotes relaxation and serenity.

All of this being said, I would state that I do not feel that we handled the guest interaction properly what-so-ever. I can assure you that the moment we became aware of the negative posting, we reviewed the experience with our staff and counseled them through the interaction to assure that the guest experience is above all expectations.

We are honored to be acknowledged by the Readers of Conde Nast for there Readers Choice Awards. As a 25 year, family owned Hospitality Company, creating an experience that is memorable and remarkable is our only goal. I hope you will contact me if you find your travels bring you back to the Oregon Coast and Cannon Beach. I would proudly be your host and I can assure you we will do our very best to create Great Memories for you and yours.
