By the end of this month, Le Parker Meridien will give up its monopoly on cult-favorite burgers. Manhattan's first Five Guys is set to open just down the block from The Shoreham, giving guests who don't want to sit in the hotel's frou-frou bar a convenient down-home dining option.

While there's no denying Five Guys is a big chain restaurant, they've managed to keep some cache and stave off the fast food label. All the burgers are fresh ground and hand formed, and while you wait, you can dig into a big box of in-the-shell peanuts. Just don't spoil your appetite.

Five Guys is awesome.  I wonder if they'll still let you through peanut shells on the floor?  Their fries are exceptional, and they tell you where the potatoes are from that day.  Juiciest, messiest burgers.

Walked by today to grab a burger (and throw peanut shells everywhere) but the place isn't open yet. The latest sign in the window says Nov. 2 is the new opening date.
