A Viceroy Hotel is Planned For Aspen Snowmass, Reluctantly

After months of haggling, the Colorado ski resort Aspen Snowmass will build a Viceroy Hotel on its mountain. Sources say the Kor Hotel Group (which owns the Viceroy name) underwent a bureaucratic nightmare to gain approval, with board members and council people debating the pros and cons of a chain hotel at the resort.
"In my 35 years of development experience, this is the most arduous, complicated and strenuous negotiation that I've ever been through," said Pat Smith, president of Base Village developer, Related WestPac.
Some consider the approval a win for both parties, other say it's a step in the wrong direction (one councilwoman even used the word "travesty"). Either way, builders are already excavating and will soon begin constructing the 256-room, $160-million hotel, which will include a 7,000 square-foot spa, fitness center, year-round swimming pool, fine dining restaurants, and ski valet facilities.
The resort, which will also be LEED certified, is expected to open in 2010.
