New Broadwater Resort for Rottnest Island, Down Under

January 22, 2007 at 9:47 AM | by | Comments (6)

If you've ever been to Western Australia you'll know that the local island paradise is Rottnest, a half-hour ferry ride from the capital city Perth. So named because early explorers saw rats--"Rat's Nest" eventually became Rottnest--that weren't actually rats, but a unique animal called a quokka instead. It's a special place with no vehicular traffic, a totally relaxed feel and a perimeter full of great beaches and snorkelling spots. And it's going to get a new hotel.

The planned new $40 million resort will be 4 and a half star (because over there, they do do things by halves) but not everybody's happy about it. Some think the island mightn't cope with the extra visitors, while others are worried that a pricey new resort will drive up prices across the island. The Broadwater Hotels group will build the new Rottnest hotel and with their experience up and down the coast of Western Australia, experience suggests they'll put up something at least half-decent.

Re: New Broadwater Resort for Rottnest Island, Dow

I was so excited by the picture I didn't even process the text part about it being real and called a QUOKKA. I WILL NOT ACCEPT stuffed substitutes. I MUST HAVE A REAL ONE!

the rodent

Its not a rodent, it was mistakenly thought of by the early dutch explorers who discovered the place, they are in fact marsupials.like wee kangeroos if you like.

rotto hotel

In my opinion, a big big mistake, the whole attraction of the island is its distinct lack of people, rotto will remain as one of the dearest memories of my visit to Oz. please think again.
