Hot Hotelier News: Pomeranc World

September 6, 2006 at 9:24 AM | 1 Comment

Today we introduce a new feature called Hot Hotelier News where we keep you posted on the work, life and love interests of our favorite hoteliers. This week, we will do one a day. After that, we'll scale back to one or two a week if we can restrain ourselves. Enjoy.

Ah...Jason Pomeranc, where do we begin? We guess we'll start it off easy with some personal info then move on slowly and carefully to the breakdown of all his hotel projects.

As we clarified last month, Jason is no baby daddy to Ami Pomeranc but what we didn't know then is that Jason is the kid's uncle. (Jason's bro Michael is the real father.) So in case any of you were worried, there is an heir to the Thompson Hotel dynasty.

Onto 6 Columbus. When Jason's Thompson Hotel Group agreed to take over the management of the former West Park Hotel, the plan was to give the place a new name and a new look. But when design differences arose as to how the place should look, the hotel was gutted and a full-on renovation was ordered. According to the Thompon Hotel group spokesperson Marissa Cortes, the hotel would have opened earlier but then there was a "problem with the city" concerning construction that lasted for a year. Now, she says, things are back on track  with construction almost completed and the Thompson group still hoping for a Fall 2006 opening.

That sounds promising but when it comes to 6 Columbus, we are in a "once bitten, twice shy" kind of mentality. We'll believe it when we can make a reservation.

More on Pomeranc World post-click.

Moving along to Allen Street, which is actually being called Thompson LES although that could change in the future. This project, which the Thompson group owns*, has had a bit of controversy with the surrounding neighborhood on the Lower East Side. But Cortes says things are progressing nicely, the work is getting done faster than anticipated and a Summer 2007 date is on the calendar as a projected opening.

Heading west, we look at Thompson Beverly Hills. A projected date of Spring 2006 was set but Cortes says that will be more like Winter 2007. Unlike 6 Columbus or Thompson LES no building problems are plaguing the renovation of the Beverly Hills Best Western. Instead, the hotel group is still working out some design kinks (designer Dodd Mitchell will do this one) which include the plans for the hotel rooftop featuring a brand-new fitness center, revamping the pool area and adding a rooftop bar so that guests can take advantage of the 360-degree views of the city. We haven't seen any construction begin on this place as of late (it's still operating as a Best Western) so a Winter 2007 date seems skeptical to us.

Also, Hollywood Roosevelt is trying to get back on track after the whole Amanda Scheer-Demme fiasco and as we suspected, the hotel is actually trying to be a hotel instead of a celeb hotspot.

Thompson Hotels has two more projects in the work including a hotel in Tribeca expected for 2008 and a DC property that same year.  At the same time, the group is working hard on their Room 100 magazine which will publish twice a year in partnership with Black Book magazine. The first limited edition lifestyle magazine will debut in November and be distributed in their hotel rooms, speciality boutiques and to a VIP list of celebrities, stylists and other people deemed worthy. Thompson is also behind the LA Suite movie, a short about a man and woman in a hotel, not for any real Thompson hotel marketing reasons, but as Cortes says just to help promote artists work. Although the art must relate back to the hotel world somehow. (See the Comments Section below for more info.)

So there you have the latest word on Jason Pomernac and Thompson Hotels projects. As for his love life, despite being shown with a several hot women when you do a Google Images search, we hear Jason has a steady girlfriend.

*Thompson Hotel Group manages some properties like Six Columbus and Hollywood Roosevelt, while owning and managing others like their flagship 60 Thompson. Easy way to remember is if they slap the Thompson name on the hotel, then they own it. However, Cortes says that there may be some exceptions to this.

Marissa Cortes also wanted to add this about the LA Suite Movie:

The LA Suite film is written and directed by acclaimed music video director Marc Webb, whose videos actually just won 2 VMAs for Best Group Video & Best Rock Video--  and conveys the idea that the concept of hotel living is about fantasy, and the idea that anything can happen in hotels, and often does.  Communicated via L.A. Suite's romantic short story line, which explores the boundaries of anonymity and escapism in hotels, the film creatively promotes hotel living in general.  In a nutshell!

We're planning a NYC screening & event this fall so I will let you know when that happens.
