Bad Rate :: Best Western Beachfront Resort
[Ed. Note: This is the Bad Rate in our Good Rate/Bad Rate feature. This rate was valid on Sept. 5, 2006 and is subject to change. Enjoy.]
We always feel leery right off the bat when we see "Best Western" and the word "resort" together, but we feel even more apprehensive when the rates are far north of what a motel room should cost you.
Unlike our Good Rate this week in St. Petersburg, Florida--the historic Pier Hotel--the Best Western Beachfront Resort has about as much character as a hotel sports bar. Here that faceless sports bar is called "Player's" and you're a long way from where the real players are. It's five miles to St. Petersburg itself and even further to anything else. Off-season rates start at $109 for a courtyard room (as in facing kids jumping around in the pool) on Sunday night though and go up from there to $170 for a weekend beachfront room. Despite the cost, a stay here comes with surprisingly few extras. Here are a few amenties touted on the web site:
* Exercise facility, Open from 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Stationary Bike and Weight Machine
* Free Morning coffee in lobby, 7:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. daily
* Computer available
Only some of the rooms have high-speed (wired) Internet access, but at least there's a pool and a beach bar. We didn't bother to post a photo here, since you know what it's going to look like and the photo they lead off with on their site is a shot of a parking lot. Here is a screen shot of the lowest regular rates for 9/15 to 9/18 though, captured from the Best Western site. AAA members can get a discount, but for a Florida gulf beach hotel in the off season, there are more enticing places to rest your head for this price.
