Canada's Globe and Mail recently visited Chicago, choosing to stay at the new James Hotel.

The Canucks were pretty happy with the place from its funky design to the friendly staff and its hip amenities like martini shakers, DVD players and "waffle-cotton robes."

Of the hotel's 297 rooms, 106 are suites with living areas that include fully stocked bars with proper-sized bottles, and media rooms with DVD players that screen movies on your wall....[I]f you don't like the free movies that the concierge has on offer, you can watch one of your two flat-screen TVs. The toiletries are lovely (Kiehl's), and the sleeping area sumptuous (more pillows than I ever thought a bed could accommodate).

The only bummer for the Globe and Mail seemed to be parking. For $45 a night one receives unlimited valet exits, but for a big city like Chicago is actually a good deal. And this is hardly steep when comparing to, say Canadian taxes.

At night, the crowd to be a mélange of sports fans, business trip types, and celebs. The hotel even hosted a recent party thrown by Dwyane Wade that included Chris Rock and R. Kelly. We only hope the James staff kept the kids out of that room.
