Mandarin Oriental Says Out with the Business Men, In with the Tourists

After a major renovation, the Mandarin Oriental Hotel in Hong Kong reopened today with higher rates and a desire to attract more of the pleasure travelers versus the business. Apparently these will be some wealthy leisure-spending guests since rooms now start at $550; a 26% raise from before they closed the doors to upgrade.
According to the hotel's general manager, Peter French, this price hike is normal in a city like Hong Kong, as it is catering to the more touristy crowd rather than the business crowd.
He added that the hotel has shifted its focus from business travellers to leisure travellers, an area that the management feels offers greater growth opportunity. 'The balance between business and leisure travel had been 20 percent against 80 percent, now that's in the region of 30-70 and widening,' French said.
This new abundance of tourists in Hong Kong can look forward to more space, an incredible spa, and a space that feels like "home" according to Conde Nast. Apparently what you can expect to see less of is men in suits because they will be where the prices haven't raised and where bathrooms are judged by their offerings rather than their size.
