It's worth going down to the end of the earth to take in the view from Llao Llao, one of South America's most spectacularly-sited hotels.

Most of Argentina's best hotels may be in Buenos Aires, but there are also a few beauties scattered around the rest of the country, including the lake district around Patagonia's San Carlos de Bariloche.

Deservedly famous, Llao Llao was rebuilt after a fire and reopened in 1940. It has been impressing visitors ever since with its timber log interior and panoramas of the lakes and snow-capped mountains. The highlight is a heated infinity swimming pool that blends the outdoor with the indoor, allowing guests to swim out and breathe in the mountain air even in the dead of winter.

The haute cuisine, roaring-fireplace lounge, and spa are treats and there are not many hotels that can top the snowcapped-mountains view from the gym. The one disappointment has always been the size of the standard rooms--guests didn't lounge around in them watching TV back in 1940--but a new wing with 42 large studios and suites will open in September.
