[ED. Note: HotelChatter's first ever open thread! Get in here and help a Hotel Maven out will ya? Edster1972 wants to know which hotel he should stay in on his first visit to San Francisco. But since he's recently came into a vast fortune of Starwood Preferred Guest Points, he's limited to Starwood Properties. Help him decide by posting a comment below the story (which is better).

Hi Everyone,

I have some SPG (Starwood Preferred Guest) points and am planning a stay in San Francisco for an anniversary vacation. There are quite a few SPG hotels there, can anyone make a recommendation on which is the best??

The choices are:

  1. Westin St. Francis
  2. W San Francisco
  3. Palace Hotel
  4. Le Meridien
  5. Sheraton Fisherman's Wharf

Any favs? What are the pluses and minuses of each property - location, parking costs, proximity to attractions? This is my first visit to San Francisco and any advice would be very much appreciated.

I def. wouldn't use your SPG points for a stay at the Sheraton by the touristy wharf or the Westin. The W could be cool but not quite a place for your anniversary. I haven't checked out the other two but   I would put my points toward the upscale Starwood brands.

Westin or W SF

Westin St. Francis is right in Union Square, so if you and your significant other want to shop, you won't be disappointed.

If it was me, I would go for the W SF.  I am a free WiFi whore, and they have free WiFi in the lobby.  Plus it is right near SF MOMA (the big ash tray looking building) and Thirsty Bear.

Did you know the new Starwood St. Regis was now open  in SF (SOMA) as well?  You might want to look into that.  Very upscale and a great restaurant on site.

Hi guys: Thanks for the recommendations.  I looked up TripAdvisor and ended up booking at Le Meridien since it has the highest ratings by far.  I will share my thoughts (review!!) after my trip.

SPG Points in SF

I just got back from SF yesterday.  We spent 1 night at St. Regis.  We used Starwood promo of 2 night stay prior to 7/31/09 so we didn't have to use our spg points.  The St Regis is wonderful. When I take my husband back for our anniversay, that is where I would like to stay.  The staff is very friendly & helpful. SF has plenty of ways to get your self around so we did not rent a car.  The next 3 nights we used 36,000 spg points & stayed at The Palace.  A very elegant hotel lobby/dining with great history. The rooms are more early American where the St Regis is more modern.  St Regis had TV in bathroom, bedside electronic remote for lights, shades, etc. Room 1401 has great view.  Indoor pool very nice.No complaints whatsoever.

From DFW we flew in to San Jose because it saved $ & rode the Caltrain to Palo Alto where we spent our 1st night at Sheraton. Excellent staff there, they upgraded us to room w/view of koi pond w/out even having to ask. Palo Alto is a great town to visit with extremely nice & helpful people. Stanford U is there & worth the stop before going on to SF.  Caltrain from San Jose airport to SF cost approx $8 per person - a lot cheaper than a taxi and a nice ride. Sit up top for the view.
