Bad Rate: Waldorf-Astoria's Romance Package

[Ed. Note: The screenshot for our Bad Rate feature was taken on July 24, 2006 and rates are always subject to change.]
While looking at models in lingerie may stir amorous feelings at the regular rate, say "not tonight honey" to the Waldorf-Astoria's Romance Package.
Our calculator-wielding inner skeptic always perks up when we see the word "honeymoon" or "romance" listed for a hotel package deal. It's usually a sign you'll be paying a lot of money for just a little extra pampering. Sure enough, this romance package from New York's Waldorf-Astoria leaves us feeling a bit turned off.
The regular rate for July 30 is $289. The Romance Package, with breakfast and a bottle of sparkling wine will cost you $464, or an an extra $175. The same premium applies to a concierge suite, even though the concierge level already comes with a continental (but not full) breakfast. This screen shot is from their Hilton booking site, for the night of July 30.
We suggest you take that $175 and get out of the hotel for a real Manhattan experience for two instead. Get some romantic suggestions from the concierge for cocktails in the evening, then cozy up in a booth at a breakfast spot the next day.
