Downtown Chicago, modern French design, wireless internet, free wine...ok, we're in. The Hotel Monaco on Wabash won TripAdvisor's 2005 Traveler's Choice for "Best Luxury" hotel. The feedback and the amenities list practically put this place over the top:

My husband and I stayed in one of the "Mediterranean Suites" and it was lovely! Not overly swank, but comfortable, with a pretty decor and two unbeatable features--a great two-person jacuzzi and deep, wide, curtained-off window seats where you could sit and read or look out at the river. You really can't find that anyplace else in Chicago for the price. I would definitely stay here again.

A taste of the Mediterranean in downtown Chicago makes for a perfect, yet realistic retreat since in the end, it is in the Midwest. Aside from standard Kimpton Free WiFi and wine tasting, the hotel offers up these amenities: Complimentary morning coffee service, guest passes to nearby Crunch exercise facility for $10, "Om Away From Home" yoga program with the Yoga Channel on every TV, and "Forgot It? We've Got It!" essential travel items. And of course, don't forget to ask for a pet goldfish during your stay.

Rooms start at $169.
