Drinking and Swimming: The Fairmont

The pool at the Fairmont San Francisco's Tonga Room & Hurricane Bar isn't actually for swimming. It's not even outside.

The pool is just one part of the tropical Hawaiian setting where fake thunder and rain storms go off and on as you sip your Mai Tais in what is essentially the hotel basement.

But the happy hour there from 5 to 7p.m. is well worth it. Pacific Rim cuisine like spare ribs, vegetable chow mein, pork buns, and pot stickers are all served as part of the buffet which is $7 a person, plus one drink.

And there's live music. A band on a mini boat floats around the pool. It's certainly an escape from San Francisco.
