The pool area at Mandalay Bay has a bit for everyone. Over 11-acres, this place has a lazy river ride, a wave pool, four pools, a sand and surf beach, three whirlpools and even a jogging track.
The wave pool is one of the highlights with waves that rise up to six feet and splash down on 2,700 tons of real California sand (which is 1,000 tons more than they had last year.) And by coincidence, the wave pool is run by a man whose first name is Moses.
On summer nights, the beach area hosts Concerts on the Beach where guests can sit on the beach or wade into the wave pool to listen to the music.
Then there's the infamous Moorea Beach Club. Like Caesars and Wynn, this Beach Club offers topless bathing. Perhaps to keep out any pervs, the place is only open to hotel guests and even then there's a fee. Guys pay $40 during the week and $50 on the weekend, while girls pay $10 no matter what day. You have several options for laying out here. There's the comfy cushioned chaise lounge chairs, opium beds and day beds (which seat four people) and pavilions which seat six to eight people and include a flat screen television, king bed and CD player. Of course these are all available for a fee, starting at $200 for a daybed.
The hotel has also undergone some renovations to their cabanas with 38 of them open now and more expected soon. These cabanas come with four lounge chairs, cable television, secure cabinet, refrigerator filled with water and assorted non-alcoholic drinks, two rafts, two inner tubes, table and chairs, misters, ceiling fans, and beverage service. They are priced from $250 to $500 and reservations must be made seven days in advance.
Ten beach bungalows can be found on the beach offering much of the same as the cabanas but with a state-of-the-art music system and a private changing area.
As for food, the hotel has two pool area restaurants, the Surf Cafe and the Temple Bar which serve drinks, and a limited menu but one that includes sushi.
While there seems to be a bit for all ages here, the younger crowd rules the place over the weekend:
[The pool area] becomes a "mid 20's age group" of guests who are ready to party for the weekend. This partying atmosphere continues poolside where you can see buckets of beer being delivered early in the morning. Weekends are when the pool is very crowded, creating a chair and towel shortage. We handled this problem by visiting other hotels and casinos on the weekend. By Sunday, the place was back to normal. Use the South Lagoon pool on busy days.
