Yee Haw, W Hotel Dallas Opens
On Friday, the W Dallas Victory Hotel and Residences opened, somewhat on time, in downtown Dallas. The hotel has 252 guestrooms, 144 one- and two-bedroom condos, Craft restaurant, an off-shoot of Las Vegas' nightclub, Ghostbar on the 33rd floor, a bliss spa and a 16th floor infinity pool and fitness facility with view of the city.
These are all to be expected from a W but the hotel has included an extravagant amenity this time--the first custom rooftop heliport for any W hotel. It's also the first W Hotel to open with residences.
In the lobby, water has a big presence along with a horse and cowboy figurines that hang from the ceiling. In fact, the hotel plays up the cowboy and Texas-style angle a lot. Rooms have 11-foort ceilings, 42" flat-screen TVs, seven foot beds and full-size bliss bath products.
But the hotel gets docked some points by an architectural review:
On the other side of the [front] door, however, confusion reigns. The Living Room...features cushy sofas and chairs surrounding Texas limestone coffee tables topped with square vases of wheat grass. The vernacular touches work here, whereas elsewhere they come off as gratuitous, even a bit patronizing: as in the limestone front on the lobby bar and the rock pool behind the reception desk. Ditto for the cowboy curtain on the main staircase, a nod to Dallas' nonexistent cowboy heritage.
These are the kinds of details you expect in a Hill Country inn, not a bastion of international cool.... Eclecticism without an organizing idea is just clutter.
The condos will open later this summer and fall. And beware, as of Saturday, the Ghostbar was still not finished.
