Good Rate: Le Merigot Santa Monica
[Ed. Note: Welcome to our Good Rate/Bad Rate feature where we look at hotel prices in the same city and decide which is better worth your hard-earned benjamins. The screenshot here was taken on June 19, 2006 and rates are subject to change.]

Let's say you had this burning yearning desire to stay on the beach in Santa Monica this summer. Well, we have some bad news for you. The rates are jacked up over there. The Best Western which ain't all that cheap (around $300 a night) and sits across from the pier with no direct beach access, is full up for the month of July.
This ultimately makes Good Rate/Bad Rate very difficult for us since no rate will be "good." Yet, we decided to pick two hotels that sit right next to each other and see which one has the better deal.
The winner? Marriott's Le Merigot Santa Monica with a room rate of $299 a night. (Yikes!)
The rooms (an ocean view is not guaranteed) have Cloud 9 beds with Frette linens. There's a spa and a pool, not to mention the nearby Santa Monica beach and its biking/jogging trails.
Sadly, the hotel does not allow the windows to be opened, so if you want to smell the ocean air from your room, you're outta luck. And parking, as with lots of city hotels, will cost you $28 a day.
