Let's Face It, Extended Stay Hotels Will Never Be Cool

June 2, 2006 at 1:18 PM | by Tim L. | 0 Comments

In case all you business travelers who are dispatched away from home for periods at a time don't have enough extended-stay hotels to choose from, another one is coming.

Starwood's Westin branch is launching another extended-stay brand to compete with the likes of Hilton's Homewood Suites and Marriott's Residence Inn.

You know, the places where you get a room the size of a Manhattan apartment, instead of one the size of a Manhattan studio.

Since there's already a dozen of these clustered around every boring suburban office park in America, we are skeptical this one will be any different.

However, Starwood exec Steven Heyer has high hopes:

"The product in this segment is frankly pretty boring," Heyer said in a statement. "We've created a fresh concept ... that will appeal to sophisticated travelers who have really had to compromise in the past."

How can this kind of hotel not be a compromise? Our suggestions to Starwood would be to have free WiFi, comfortable sheets, clean duvets, a real cafe instead of a breakfast buffet stocked with cereal boxes and bad coffee and a decent television. A fully-stocked fridge, and a dog to bring our slippers wouldn't be bad either.
