Turns out those fancy hotels in Knightsbridge are not the best British hotels. Instead, the Whitehall Hotel in Darwen, recently won "Best Independent Hotel" at a ceremony in London.

Having undergone extensive inspections by the Best Practice Forum, a group that judges a hotel's ability to adopt to using best practices in all aspects, the Whitehall was deemed winner for its "willingness to adopt or adapt best practice in all aspects of their operation."

In true Darwin-fashion, the owners aren't going to rest on their laurels, saying "there's still much to do". Paul and Tracey Bullows who took over the hotel in August 2003 are transforming the hotel pool into a restaurant, proving that change even in an old Victorian style inn is necessary to remain top.

Evolution, baby. Think about it.
