If you don't pony up an extra $10 when booking at the Tropicana in Las Vegas, you'll get a room that's ready for the wrecking ball.

The Tropicana Hotel in Las Vegas is an oldie but goodie for the mid-range crowd, with a big meandering swimming pool, $5 blackjack tables, and rates that can drop below $50 mid-week.

But beware the dreaded "Garden Rooms" at the rock bottom rate though (the 4000 wing), or you could be stuck with an anti-view of a parking lot, as in this photo from room 4129.

Over this past weekend, Columbia Entertainment bid close to $2 billion to buy the Tropicana's parent company. The new buyer reportedly said, "some low-rise buildings at the existing hotel" would likely be razed to make way for improvements. Which probably means these faded motel-like garden rooms will soon be history.

Instead, shell out $10 more and get a big Island Tower room with views of the glittering lights of Vegas. (And mirrors on the ceiling and bedside wall, if you favor another kind of "strip view.")

Advantage

I've been in Las Vegas a few years ago and I've stayed at this hotel. Despite the rooms inconvenient, that's the place where you can find the cheapest car rentals in the city ( if you are the hotel's client, of course). But after all you're in Las Vegas, so it doesn't matter the room's view, but how much money you can spend in the casinos.
