Some hotels like to offer their guests a chance to ride around in a Maserati or a Mercedes-Benz. But for those willing to think beyond the romantic canals and singing gondoliers of Venice and stay just outside of the city, Hotel Villa Dori will offer up an Italian oasis of cleanliness, culture, local cuisine...and a mini-van.

Yup, the vehicle of choice for millions of Soccer Moms is also the auto du jour at Villa Dori. Aside from airport pick up and drop off, the mini-van service will bring guests as close to downtown Venice as ground transportation can get--whenever needed and with handsome Italian service at that (meaning frumpy housewives armed with cheese snacks and yogurt packs are not doing the driving.)

Within the hotel is a Venice of the 1700s, each room different and marvelously gaudy with shiny gold furniture, bright blue wallpaper, wardrobes for closets, and one of the biggest bathrooms a lower budget European hotel could provide. Family-run and low on English skills, the staff is friendly and accommodating.

Plus with rooms at $40 for a single, you may actually be able to afford a gondola ride in the stinking...er sinking city.

gondola

van rental in venice can be expensive, in fact the whole city is pretty cash heavy, getting a nice gondola can cost a fortune, but its well worth it if you dont mind the smell..
