Dubai Seeks Hotel Domination

Dubai is gung-ho on hotels. Massive luxury hotels that is.

Yesterday, a $27 billion dollar resort project was unveiled that will include the world's largest hotel when completed. The Bawadi project  will have six-mile long strip (akin to Vegas sans casinos), with "31 hotels modelled on ancient Egyptian palaces, Hollywood, London's Houses of Parliament and even the moon."

At the heart of this strip will be the 6,500-room Asia Asia Hotel. If built, the hotel will unseat the MGM Grand, which has 5,044 rooms, as the world's largest hotel. Developers aim to complete the hotel by 2010.

The Bawadi project as a whole will bring 29,000 hotel rooms to Dubai (double the amount now) and will be able to accomodate 3 million tourists by 2016.

Just another fact of how much construction has been going on in Dubai lately is that an estimated 17 percent of the world's cranes can be found in Dubai.
