Hotel San Diego Goes Bust

by juliana | April 5, 2006 at 10:10 AM | 0 Comments

As you can tell from the above picture, the Hotel San Diego has seen some better days. Unfortunately, on Tax Day aka April 15 the hotel will be history. The city of San Diego will demolish the hotel at 8:05 a.m.

No new hotel property will be going up here. Instead the U.S. District Court will get a new 22-story tower. (The hotel's original structure was deemed unsafe in case of earthquakes.)

The city's historical society and preservations are naturally up in arms since the hotel is 92 years old (and abandoned for five.) But despite their nearly five years of efforts, the artifacts that were salvaged from the hotel last year will be the only remains. According to the demolitionists,

"Afterward it will be just like we were never there - we hope."

For those of you who live in the area, the hotel implosion will be opened for a limited public viewing.
