Just when we decide to plan a summer vacation, the bad news hits: prices are up. Will we ever be able to book and go on a budget trip in the same season again? According to travel experts and the LA Times, we should have made summer travel plans last summer.

And an Expedia.com survey indicates despite early bookings, we can still expect to pay an average of $261 a day for food and lodging.

If you aren't a planner, some other tried and true ways to save money when booking hotel rooms for the summer is to:

·  Be flexible on travel dates; midweek prices are usually cheaper.
·  Be open to hotel packages--no matter how silly the theme--which might save money, especially if airfare is included
·  Be open to staying in the financial districts of big cities, where hotels drop rates on weekends.

Budget travelers take note: Hawaii wins for the most expensive state for lodging... think $599 for food and room. New York City and Vegas aren't cheap either, expect to pay over $300 per day.
