Good Rate: W San Diego

[Ed. Note: Welcome to our Good Rate/Bad Rate feature where we look at hotel prices in the same city and decide which is better worth your hard-earned benjamins. The screenshot here was taken on April 25, 2006 and rates are subject to change. Enjoy.]
Regardless of where you stand on the immigration issue, please say you will down a few margaritas and bring back the Macarena come Cinco de Mayo next weekend.
We checked out what was going on near the border--literally--in San Diego and found that the W Hotel is offering a special internet-only rate of $279.
While that is not quite a steal (your weekend total will hit close to $600 so split with a friend) it's better and cleaner than celebrating in Tijuana; you get special access to the rooftop "sandbar" and can watch all the Cinco de Mayo festivities taking place in the city.
However the price is an internet-only special (perhaps because the reservations page is so tough to manage they give you a price break for doing it.) Which means there are no cancellations allowed. So if you plan on actually going beyond the border for a visit, do it after your W stay in case the Federales "mistakenly" lock you up.
Coincidentally, there are plenty of bail bond places next to the W San Diego, should you find yourself naked on the street wearing just a sombrero.
