Harbour Island: Record Moguls Gift To Honeymooners

March 9, 2006 at 7:08 PM | 0 Comments

Chris Blackwell is the dude that "discovered" Bob Marley. He started Island Records back in 1959 and these days he runs Island Outpost, a company that owns five Caribbean resorts, including Harbour Island's Pink Sands. So let's get this straight--he spent most of his adulthood running a record company, and now he lives in the islands operating hotels? This might be the only dude that has a better life than Jack Johnson.

Pink Sands is a collection of 25 (or so) chic pastel beach cottages scattered over 20-acres of land directly above Pink Sands Beach. While the resort is right on one of the world's best beaches, you may want to rent a golf cart to trek into town. If you do, remember, they drive on the left side of the road, oh and don't drink and golf cart drive--seriously.

Blackwell's resort feels secluded and hip, in an understated way. Everything is spread out on the grounds, which is great for privacy, but could be an issue if you don't want to walk a long distance to the pool area.

Most cottages have king beds, air-conditioning, mini-bar, private patios with teak furniture, and they are said to have WiFi on the property, though we didn't get around to testing it--give us a break, we were at the beach.

Blue Bar has amazing views, but the food isn't much. Someone told us breakfast was better than the other meals. The resort has plenty of beach loungers and umbrellas for guests.

The Upside:
Location and privacy. These cottages are fairly spaced out over the expansive resort grounds.

The Downside:
Might want to go elsewhere for food and nightlife. The food is so so and the nightlife was non-existent during our visit. The bar closes very early, sometimes in the afternoon.

The Crowd:
Hip honeymooners and wanna be hip baby boomers.

Bottom Line:
This is the honeymoon resort on Harbour Island. If you can afford the two bedroom beachfront cottage with a hot tub and a hammock on the deck, congratulations, you are officially a good catch. Try to snag an ocean cottage, if you can.
